In The Birth of Contemporary Art: 1945-1970, a Global History (Naissance de l’art contemporain. 1945-1970 une histoire mondiale), Béatrice  Joyeux-Prunel poses an iconoclastic question: has New York, as one reads everywhere, been the center of artistic innovation since 1945? A comparative approach dismantles the myth of New York art and underscores the emergence, beginning in the 1950s, of an internationalized but unequal system of production of artworks and careers. This global history of art examines several surprising global turning points: from Brazilian concretism to Italian and Yugoslavian kinetic art, from Japanese Neo-Dada Organizers to Viennese actionists, the book allows us to understand what our museums set up as canonical, all the while revealing little-known histories of the world of contemporary art.
